Paulo Fonseca is the new manager of AC Milan after joining the Serie A club from French side Lille. The Portuguese manager replaces Stefano Pioli who left the Rossoneri after five years. It is Fonseca’s second role in the Italian league, having previously managed Roma for two seasons before departing for France.
AC Milan have confirmed the appointment of Paulo Fonseca as their new head coach.
The Portuguese manager arrives at San Siro from Lille, signing a three-year deal with the Serie A giants.
The club confirmed the news on their website, writing: “AC Milan can confirm that Paulo Fonseca has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Men’s First Team.
“The Portuguese coach now joins AC Milan on a three-year contract.
“The Club would like to wish Paulo and his staff a warm welcome.”
Fonseca returns to Italy having managed Roma from 2019 to 2021 before his two-year spell with Lille.
He replaces Stefano Pioli who left the club at the end of last season following five years at the club which included winning Serie A in 2022.
Milan finished second to Inter last season, but trailed their city rivals by a hefty 19 points.
They also suffered the indignity of Inter confirming their latest scudetto win with victory in April’s Milan derby.
Following spells at Pacos de Ferreira, Porto and Braga in his native Portugal, Fonseca moved to Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine in 2016 where he went on to win three league titles in successive years before leaving for Roma.
His two seasons at the Stadio Olimpico saw 5th and 7th place finishes respectively before leaving in the summer of 2021.
Joining Lille, he led the side to a fifth place finish in his debut campaign before going one better to finish fourth a year later to secure a Champions League qualification place.
Lille also reached the quarter-final of the Europa Conference League where they were narrowly beaten on penalties by Aston Villa.
