Ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George has received support from the Club Owners Association of Nigeria.

George who has previously lifted the Nigeria Premier Football League title with Enyimba was officially announced by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as the new head coach of the country’s senior men’s national team in April following the exit of Jose Peseiro.

The ex-international, who served as assistant to Peseiro for a year and eight months, was part of the backroom team which guided the Eagles team to a second placed finish at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

Voicing his support on behalf of the Club Owners Association in Nigeria, its Chairman, Okey Kpalukwu stated that he was in no doubt that George would score high marks in his present designation.

Kpalukwu who is also the General Manager of NPFL club, Rivers United, highlighted the belief in George’s ability while also stating how pleased he is to see a product of the domestic scene getting rewards for hard work.

“Finidi George is a very good coach and we want him to succeed,” Kpalukwu said.

“He is one of our own, not just because he is a Nigerian but also because he is shaped out of our domestic where he competed previously as a player and a coach.

“He is a product of our domestic football scene and using my position as the Chairman of Club Owners Association, I want to wish him all the best.

“All the clubs are solidly behind him if you also point out the fact that he was given the Super Eagles job while in our local league.

“We are all praying for his success in this assignment, to lead our nation into the next World Cup as he also shows what he is made of.

“We are certain that by God’s grace, Finidi will succeed.”

George will lead his Eagles against South Africa on June 7 and then travel to face Benin three days later, in what are must-win games for Nigeria to stand a chance to qualify for the biggest showpiece in 2026.

The Nations Cup finalists currently sit third in Group C with two points amassed with South Africa second with three recorded and Rwanda top with four points.
